How to Choose the Right School for Your Child

Kigali has many good schools to choose from now, and that makes the decision harder, not easier. But when you think about it honestly, four questions do most of the work.

Where will your child study after school?

If they might go to university outside Rwanda , UK, US, anywhere international an IB, Cambridge, or American curriculum school prepares them for that. REB alone does not. But if your child is heading to a Rwandan university, what really counts is national exam performance. A school like Glory Academy that is built around that may be the better choice, even if it is less talked about than the international schools.

What can you actually spend per year?

Work out the real number, not just the tuition. IGCSE and IB exam fees are charged separately and can add RWF 1,000,000–3,000,000 or more per session. Add transport, registration, and any extra support your child needs during the year. When you add it all up: budget schools cost roughly RWF 2,500,000–5,500,000 per year for primary; mid-range schools RWF 6,500,000–12,000,000; and premium international schools RWF 13,500,000–22,000,000 and above.

What kind of environment do you want your child growing up in?

KICS, Wellspring, and Path to Success are faith-based schools. Christian values shape how they teach and how they run day to day. If that matters to your family, it should carry real weight in your decision. If it does not, GHA and ISK are secular international schools.

How far is the school from home?

Transport in Kigali adds up  in time and money. Schools in Nyarutarama, Kibagabaga, and Kimihurura are reachable from most parts of the city, but before you commit, find out how your child will get there every morning and what that costs across a full school year.

How to Choose

Think about where your child is likely to study after school. If it is abroad UK, US, international  IB, Cambridge, or American curriculum will prepare them better than REB alone. If they are heading to a Rwandan university and national exams are what counts, a school like Glory Academy may actually be the right call, even if it gets less attention than the international schools.

Work out your realistic annual spend, not just tuition. IGCSE and IB exam fees are charged separately and can add RWF 1,000,000–3,000,000+ per session. Transport, registration, and learning support add up. Budget schools sit at roughly RWF 2,500,000–5,500,000 for primary; mid-tier at RWF 6,500,000–12,000,000; premium international schools at RWF 13,500,000–22,000,000 and above.

Think about the kind of environment your child will spend most of their waking hours in. KICS, Wellspring, and Path to Success are genuinely faith-based ,that shapes daily school life. GHA and ISK are not. If faith matters to your family, factor it in.

And check how far the school is from home. Transport in Kigali takes time and costs money. Schools in Nyarutarama, Kibagabaga, and Kimihurura are accessible from most of the city, but confirm the actual transport options before you decide.
