The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) of Japan is offering one of the most accessible and genuinely well-supported government-funded internship programmes available to international students and young professionals anywhere in the world. The METI Japan Internship Program (JIP) 2026 places international participants at Japanese small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) covering airfare, accommodation, visa support, insurance, and training with no application fee and no IELTS required. And the deadline is 30 June 2026. That is six weeks away.
This guide gives you every verified detail from the official METI JIP website what the programme covers, both internship formats, who is eligible, what the selection process looks like, and exactly how to apply.
The METI Japan Internship Program is a government initiative designed to address a very specific and practical challenge: Japan's small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) face significant shortages of human resources and international perspective and to address this, METI recruits international talent from developing countries and places them at Japanese companies giving participants genuine professional experience while helping Japanese businesses expand their global outlook. This is not a ceremonial programme, Interns work within real Japanese companies in fields including engineering, IT, business, design, environmental science, manufacturing, and more and they learn Japanese business culture, work alongside Japanese colleagues, and are matched based on their professional skills and interests.
The programme also goes beyond the internship period itself but connecting interns with potential job opportunities in Japan and offering Japanese language training as part of ongoing support.
One of the most distinctive features of the METI JIP is that it operates in two formats. Applicants choose the one that fits their situation.
Selected interns travel to Japan and work physically within a Japanese SME for the full duration of the programme. This is the most immersive format participants gain firsthand experience of Japanese workplace culture, build direct professional relationships, and live in Japan during the internship period.
Duration is approximately 6–7 weeks per term. Interns are placed at 80 Japanese SMEs one intern per company ,meaning each placement is individual and focused rather than a group programme.
Selected interns work remotely within their own workspace, under the direct management and direction of a Japanese host company. This format is designed for participants who cannot travel to Japan due to existing commitments, visa constraints, or other circumstances.
The online format does not provide the same level of cultural immersion as the on-site programme, but it offers genuine professional experience with Japanese companies for participants who cannot relocate.
This programme is fully funded but understanding exactly what is and is not covered is important for financial planning.
Round-trip economy-class airfare to and from Japan for on-site participants only
Accommodation in Japan for the duration of the on-site internship arranged and paid by the programme
Visa support assistance with the Japanese visa application process, including the necessary documentation
Comprehensive insurance health and accident insurance coverage for the duration of the internship
Pre-internship professional training and orientation preparation for working in Japan's business environment
Japanese language training provided as part of the programme support package
Electronic device loan interns can borrow equipment such as laptops, communication devices, and mobile phones where needed
Daily allowance of ¥1,000–¥3,000 a modest daily contribution toward incidental expenses
Post-internship job connection support the programme actively works to connect interns with potential employment opportunities in Japan after the programme ends
What the programme does NOT cover:
For online participants: Airfare and accommodation are not applicable. The core benefits are the professional experience, insurance, training, and post-internship support.

The application form covers several sections:
Complete every section carefully as the screening process is based on this collected information first impressions matter.
After passing the initial document screening, successful applicants are required to submit:
Interns are selected through a structured screening process. The primary evaluation criteria are:
Shortlisted candidates are matched with Japanese SMEs based on their skills, interests, and the host company's requirements. For the on-site programme, 80 companies each accept one intern — meaning each match is individual and specific.
Selected interns receive their placement confirmation and begin visa and travel preparations with the support of the JIP office.

Japan is one of the world's leading economies in manufacturing technology, robotics, automotive engineering, electronics, and environmental science. Working within a Japanese SME even for six weeks provides direct exposure to working methods, professional standards, and technical approaches that are rarely accessible from outside the country.
An internship endorsed by the Japanese government and completed within a real Japanese company is a meaningful addition to any CV — particularly for applicants aiming for careers in international business, engineering, technology, or Japan-related fields.
The METI JIP explicitly aims to support interns in finding employment in Japan after the programme. Post-internship job connection support is a formal component of the programme not an afterthought. Japan's labour market is actively seeking international talent, and the JIP is designed in part as a structured recruitment pipeline.
The barriers to entry are intentionally low. What matters is your professional or academic background, your motivation, and your fit with available company placements.
For students who cannot take six weeks away from their studies or cannot arrange a visa in time, the online format offers professional experience with Japanese companies without leaving home.
The most common weakness in METI JIP applications is a generic statement of purpose “I want to experience Japanese business culture and grow professionally.” very applicant writes this. Strong applications name a specific industry or technical field, describe relevant skills or experience you bring to a Japanese company, and explain concretely what you hope to learn and how it connects to your career.
The deadline is 30 June 2026, but host company placements are filled on a rolling basis. Early applications have access to the full range of available company matches. Late applications may find that the most relevant placements are already filled.
If you have genuine commitments that prevent travel to Japan in October–December 2026, apply for the online format rather than selecting on-site and then withdrawing. The online format is a legitimate, well-supported option — not a lesser alternative.
Recommendation letters take time to arrange. As soon as you decide to apply, contact your university supervisor, department head, or employer and request the letter even before you have completed the online form. Having it ready accelerates your application significantly.
Any prior experience with Japanese companies, Japanese language study, or East Asian business context strengthens your application. Even JLPT N5 level, a beginner certificate and demonstrates initiative and genuine interest in Japan.
The programme is fully funded in terms of covered costs airfare (on-site), accommodation, visa support, insurance, training, and a daily allowance of ¥1,000–¥3,000. However, there is no monthly salary or stipend. This is not an employment contract it is a fully supported internship placement with incidental expense coverage.
The application deadline is 30 June 2026. Applications are submitted online through the official METI JIP portal at internshipprogram.go.jp. Apply early host company placements are filled on a rolling basis and the most relevant positions may fill before the final deadline.
No. IELTS is not required, and no specific test score threshold is mandated. You must demonstrate English or Japanese proficiency (minimum JLPT N3 for Japanese), but this is assessed through the application and screening process rather than through a specific test result.
Review the official application instructions to confirm whether dual applications are permitted. The online and on-site formats have different dates and different coverage, choose the format that genuinely fits your availability and circumstances.
For the on-site programme, 80 interns are placed in 80 Japanese SMEs — one intern per company. The online programme may accommodate additional participants. The total number across both formats is approximately 200 according to some sources, but the on-site placement of 80 is confirmed from the official programme page.
No. Previous participants in the METI Internship Programme from FY2016 to FY2025 under any format are not eligible to apply again.
No. English proficiency is sufficient. Japanese language ability at JLPT N3 or higher is an advantage and may make you a stronger candidate for certain host company matches, but it is not a requirement for English-proficient applicants.
