One of the most generous government scholarship programmes in the world has officially opened for the 2026–2027 academic year. Qatar's Ministry of Education and Higher Education (MoEHE) has launched its annual Government Scholarship Plan, introducing new academic pathways and expanded financial support aimed at building national expertise in priority sectors. If you are a Qatari national who has completed your high school diploma, this guide covers everything you need to know before applications open on 1 July 2026.
The Qatar Government Scholarship is a fully funded programme administered by the Ministry of Education and Higher Education. It supports eligible Qatari students in pursuing bachelor's, master's, doctoral, and diploma-level studies at top universities both within Qatar and abroad in countries including the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Japan, and Australia.
The plan is built around four strategic objectives: economic growth, equal opportunity, diversity and inclusion, and talent development, in line with Qatar National Vision 2030 and the Third National Development Strategy.
The 2026–2027 cycle introduces some notable new additions, including a dedicated scholarship track for students with disabilities, enabling them to enroll in specialized international universities, and a bridging programme allowing students from the humanities track to transition into scientific disciplines. Priority fields this year include nuclear engineering, artificial intelligence, data science, and clinical psychology.
The Amiri Scholarship is the flagship and most prestigious track. It provides scholarships to outstanding students with the highest grades in high school at the top-ranking 24 universities worldwide, in addition to five local universities on the approved scholarship lists. Applications for this track open from 1 July to 15 August 2026.
This is the track for top-performing students. If your high school GPA puts you among the highest achievers, this is the one to target.
This programme covers study at international universities beyond the Amiri list. It covers all disciplines, including newly added tracks in education, professional diplomas, sports, and creative industries subjects that were previously restricted to local study only.
Benefits:
Destination countries include the USA, UK, Canada, Japan, Australia, and other approved nations.
For students who prefer to study within Qatar, the Local Scholarship Programme supports enrolment at institutions inside the country particularly Education City universities across medicine, engineering, computer science, health sciences, applied sciences, and more. The Tomouh programme specifically targets teacher training and diploma-level qualifications.
Monthly allowances under the Local Programme:
This is the most important section to read carefully. The Qatar Government Scholarship is exclusively for Qatari nationals. It is not open to international students.
To be eligible, applicants must:
Additionally, postgraduate scholarships for government employees in the 2026–2027 cycle are subject to stricter eligibility criteria, including academic requirements and employer approval to ensure alignment with workforce planning.
Registration for external scholarships, Education City institutions and private universities will open from July 1 to August 15, covering opportunities for students seeking placements abroad or within Qatar's international branch campuses. Applications for public universities, including Qatar University, will run from November 15 to December 30, with admissions based on academic merit and programme-specific requirements.
Note: Upon receiving the scholarship, recipients are required to sign a service bond committing to work in the public sector for a period equal to their study duration.
The 2026–2027 scholarship plan does not represent just an educational opportunity, but a comprehensive system designed to prepare future leaders by linking scholarships to actual government needs and ensuring clear career pathways after graduation.
For Qatari students, this is one of the most financially generous scholarship systems globally. Monthly allowances of up to QAR 12,000 (approximately $3,300 USD), business class flights, and a pre-travel grant all while studying at the world's top 24 universities is a package very few countries offer their students. The expansion into disability access and humanities-to-science bridging also makes the 2026–2027 plan the most inclusive in recent memory.
New scholarship deadlines open every week. Don't miss another opportunity.
